HEALING THE FORESTS THROUGH EM TECHNOLOGY

ABSTRACT
Thailand has a natural endowment of biodiversity, with a multitude of species, varieties and ecotypes in different ecosystems. This is a natural treasure and an economic asset. The direct values are through the use of species in agriculture, fisheries, forestry and eco tourism, while the indirect values occur via their contribution to the regulation of climate, water quantity and quality, erosion control, sediment retention, soil development and nutrient cycling, just to name a few. While the value of these aspects are yet to be appreciated and quantified, they need to be protected and integrated immediately on a sustainable basis into the lifestyle of Thailand for the current and future generations.
However, destruction of forests is a major problem in Thailand, and the genetic base is being eroded rapidly. Hence healing forests to enhance and enrich the biodiversity is of major economic significance. Although many techniques have been used, their success has been limited. Thus, due to the benefits of the technology of Effective Microorganisms that have been achieved in agriculture in Thailand by adopting Kyusei Nature Farming at many locations, a program was launched to enrich the biodiversity through this method. The application of EM was undertaken by volunteers using fermented compost (Bokashi) and the spraying of activated EM. The success was clearly observed within a short period of time, where both flora and fauna of the forest was increased significantly. The presentation highlights the modalities that were used for the process and quantifies the enrichment of biodiversity of this tropical evergreen forest through the use of EM Technology.
